12.4 Boys First Ever Tournament

The Under 12.4 Boys got their first taste of Tournament Basketball and clearly enjoyed it, going all the way through to the Grand Final. Nicki Mathieson put together this great report from the weekend:

What a journey for Waverley boys  U12-4s! The team,  all new to rep this season, went into the Eltham Dandenong Tournament without the experience of a win, to play off against Bulleen in the Grand Final of U12 South East C4. We were outplayed by a far superior team and came runners up, but even as their lead surpassed 40 points, Waverley never gave up. 

Our first team win was the second match of competition. This was quickly followed up by a win in our next match, and confidence grew. Our last match for the competition was at home, against Eltham and they were too strong for our defences and we were easily defeated. Our results saw us third on the ladder and we were to play a morning semi final against Eltham, the same team who had beaten us easily the day before. 

With no expectations, Waverley got off to a flying start scoring the first two goals and never gave up the lead. Today their defence was tight, each shot good and they won 20 to 13. Everyone was surprised, they were off to the finals!

Eltham hosted the finals in the heat of Monday afternoon. The boys were incredibly relaxed given the situation. However, I don't think anyone was expecting them to be announced onto the court! (This was their first competition)

The Falcons were well supported and fought valiantly until the very end, but Bulleen was far too strong. They took the final 56 to 13. Not only did the boys take home a trophy from the competition, but also some great experiences and lessons.
