Under 16.2 Boys Against the Odds

The Under 16.2 Boys put in a great effort at the Melbourne Tigers tournament, winning their way through to the Grand Final against more highly fancied opponents. Despite being thoroughly undermanned in the big dance, the boys battled hard to nearly steal a suprise result. Coach Adam Sicinski was glowing in his praise of the boys.

We were classified in the highest under 16 group and I knew that the boys were in for a challenge. However, we managed to beat the odds and get through to the final. In the final we only had six players because a couple of boys weren't available to play on Sunday. But the boys that were there played an incredible basketball game against an exceptional team that had comfortably won all their previous games. But we pushed them to the brink. No we didn't win. We lost by 5 points, but given the circumstances and given the fact that we were playing against VC players (we're a Metro 3 team), the boys stood tall and held their own. It literally came down to a couple of big baskets that they hit and we didn't, and that was the difference in the game. Also Jayson Miller won the MVP on the losing team. That says something. But all six boys really played the best basketball of their lives. It was one of the highest quality games I've been involved with as a coach. I wish we got it on video.
