Round One is in the books for the 2014 Big V Season, and while it wasn't the kindest weekend for the Falcons in terms of wins, the signs are very positive moving forward.
The highlight of the weekend was the State Championship Men, who travelled up the hill to take on the Sherbrooke Suns and came away with a comprehensive 20 point win. The Suns were buzzing pre-game with the late addition of two quality American Imports, but the Falcons usual crew (the "Crewsual") were businesslike with their work. Threatt, Platenik, Kelleher, Bridgwater, Arkell and others were all effective, as the Falcons continued their good pre-season form.
The other three Falcons teams played thier respective home openers, with the Youth Men putting on a thrilling game against Monash Freeway rivals Dandenong. It was fast paced, high scoring and close all the way to the end. Despite the second straight week of impressive performances from Emmanual Marlou and Matt "Macca" McCarthy, the Falcons fell just short by two points. Two close losses to tough perennial finalists to start the season for the Falcons, who can even that record out with a double header this coming weekend.
The Sunday Women's Double Header brought with it a good crowd, peppered with Falcons juniors and the occasional interested onlooker. The Youth Women found the going tough against a sharp Kilsyth side, hanging tough in the first half before falling away in the third. The Falcons finished well however, winning the final term. There was a lot to like about the performances of Mikaela Miller and Maria Nomikoudis, as well as Marli Kernich-Drew and a couple of other players whose names don't begin with the letter 'M'.
The final game of the weekend felt like exactly that: a final. It was a high quality affair, up tempo, quality shooting and some exciting plays made by both teams. Falcons starts Tegan Cunningham and Bridgitte Ardossi showed they have what it takes to become a legit "dynamic Duo", however the McKinnon Cougars have plenty of talent and depth as well, which showed throughout the game. It was poised for a nailbiting finish, and on the occasion the Cougars were able to make the plays when it mattered. Look out for when these two teams play again because if it is half as entertaining as this one was, you will be in for a treat.
All four Falcons teams hit the next this week: Women Double Header on Saturday (VYCW 6:30pm, SCW 8:30pm) and Men on the Sunday (VYCM 12:30pm, SCM 2:30pm). If you can't make it to the game you can always catch the action LIVE on Falcons TV at www.mindittv.net/wba.
