CHASING A DREAM IN THE LAND OF HOOPS AND GLORY
By Jonno Nash (Herald Sun)
WAVERLEY Basketball Association is raising funds to support an ambitious expedition to the US, and perhaps score a few college scholarships.
Ten representatives from the under-18 girls program will tour US college giants Duke and North Carolina - an institute that forged the illustrious career of NBA icon Michael Jordan - and play 14 matches.
The team jets off for the 24-day tour on December 28.
"We have been playing by the motto 'live the dream' and this trip exposes these talented girls under the watchful eye of college recruiters," coach Mark Sainsbery said.
"We play some high-quality high schools so their development will soar."
The high-performance program, costing around $6000 per player, will travel to North Carolina, Virginia and Los Angeles.
The association has applied for a $10,000 grant as part of the Herald Sun-Bank of Melbourne's local project initiative.
