From this week, the WBA will be rostering trainee referees on games.
Please see the following message from Referee Advisor Andrew Cavell, which will also be distributed to teams as they arrive for their games, and displayed around the stadium from this week:
Trainees begin on court this week. They are wearing fluoro green shirts and are very recognisable.
Please read below to see how you can support our Green Shirt Referees.
1) Respect their decisions; they are learning how to make correct, clear and confident
decisions. They will make mistakes. If you would like to raise an issue then please speak
with their mentor, not the trainee.
2) We have a no tolerance policy towards any player intimidating or questioning
calls of a trainee. This should be an automatic Technical Foul and a five minute
penalty in the sin-bin.
3) Once trainees show independence they will be awarded their apprentice badge.
This allows them to referee opposite their mentor, and quite often will also have another
referee on the sideline also. If you have any questions then please speak to their mentor.
If you would like to discuss anything further regarding our development program, then please do not
hesitate to contact me.
