The Under 18.2 Girls had a successful weekend culminating in a finals berth. Mark Sainsbery is once again leading the troops and was kind enough the send is a report from the weekend:
The team enjoyed success reaching the Semi Final stage of the Tournament and in the process, gained consistency and confidence leading up to the all important Grading Phase 2. Opening up with a 1 point win against Warrandyte (2) on the Friday night, this got rid of the festive season cobwebs. An early Saturday morning game against Camberwell (1) at “The Nest” saw the Dragons claim a 6 point win before another ‘home’ game saw us inflict a 31 – 18 defeat on Bulleen (4) in a game where our intensity level remained high all game. We headed to Nunawading on Sunday where we took care of Ringwood (3) with a 16 point win which we followed up with a 12 point victory over Ringwood (2). Our last game on Sunday saw us claim a come from behind Draw with Eltham (3) to give us a 4, 1 & 1 record and 2nd spot in our Pool. Monday saw us venture to the Templestowe Leisure Centre for a Semi Final clash against Camberwell (1). Our energy was up and about in the first half as the Dragons held a 1 point lead at the main break. Unfortunately, the much bigger Camberwell outfit hurt us on the boards and ultimately they claimed a 30 – 18 win. I was very pleased with the team’s performance especially given Camberwell’s top/bottom age ratio of 9/1 compared to our 2/8.
A lot of positives came out of the weekend which gave me great hope for final grading then the season proper. A big thanks to Pina Catanese (Team Manager) and Kate de Groot (Assistant Team Manager & Team Motivator) who continue to do the little things that make my job easier. I would also like to thank the parents and families who came along and supported this wonderful group of girls. Thanks also to the many club supporters who also came to watch our games at various times over the weekend. That was much appreciated.
