Promising Start for Falcons

The First VJBL Grading Phase has been completed for the 2013 season with some fantastic results for Junior Falcons teams.

On Friday, three teams qualified for Victorian Junior Championship, with more teams a chance to qualify after the break, early signs point to a history making year for the Falcons program.

Let's take a look at some of the great performances so far:

Under 12 (1) Boys - Coach: Andrew Clinch (Asst. Josh Case)

The Under 12 Boys capped off a successful first few weeks with a big win over Warrandyte. The win puts the boys in VC, which is great news for the growth and development of the program. It is another feather in the cap for Coach Andrew Clinch, whose great work in the Under 12 Age Group yields quality results year after year, shown not just in the high level of play for the first team, but also the growth of the Age Group to field 4 teams this year.

Under 14 (1) Girls - Coach: Brendon Gordon (Asst. Oscar Mackechnie)

The Under 14 Girls at Waverley return to Championship for the first time in a number of years. With the core of the East 1 winning bottom age team staying together, plus a few quality pieces added before this season, the expectations were high for this group. Opening the Grading Phase with a tough pre-grading win over Ballarat, the girls were thrown the challenge of perennial powerhouse Bulleen. A tough loss to the Boomers showed the Falcons were not far off the pace and after another tough loss to Nunawading, the girls pulled through with an important win over Eltham and then a nailbiting crossover against Keilor. Brendon Gordon will be coaching VC for the first time with an enthusiastic group of young Waverley players.

Under 18 (1) Girls - Coach: Elias Palioyiannis (Asst. George Delgiannis)

With some players returning from last year's VC team, and a few nice pickups, the excitment level for this team is through the roof. The girls starting Grading impressively with a good win over Knox (2) and then an impressive dismantling of Knox (1), after an agonising loss to Frankston, the girls bounced back with a dominant win over Warrandyte to cement their place at the top level. This is the second straight year the Under 18 Girls have qualified before the break, a great effort by the Coach Elias Palioyiannis and the team.

There are plenty of other teams recording great results, teams that can still qualify for VC after the break are: Under 12 Girls, Under 14 Boys, Under 16 Boys, Under 18 Boys. (All but one first team can still qualify for Victorian Championship.)

There are plenty of other teams recording great results on Grading as well. Anyone with reports on how their teams are performing can email them (and as always any photos to accompany reports) to andrew.kelly@waverleybasketball.com.

Falcons Sunday training starts back Sunday January 20, with the Eltham-Dandenong Tournament the next weekend.
