Waverley Princess of the Court

Basketball Victoria today announced Waverley Basketball Association’s Holly Sainsbery as ‘Princess of the Court’ for the first fortnight in June 2008. Holly has been playing basketball for 3 years and currently represents the Waverley Falcons in the Under 14 Girls Competition of the Victorian Junior Basketball League.

Holly is 11 years old and is in grade 6 at St John Vianey Primary School. Holly began playing basketball for the fun, she started playing at school in the McDonald’s® Hooptime Competition and has since progressed. She continues to play because she enjoys playing with her friends, loves the fitness and wants to learn more about the game and improve her skills. Holly once scored 10 points in her teams 38-23 win over the McKinnon Cougars and was awarded the game’s most valuable player. Holly is the mascot for the Waverley Falcons Championship Women’s team and her favourite player is Julie Brookhouse as well as the rest of the Falcons.

“I nominated Holly for the ‘Princess of the Court’ Award because she has a passion for the game, she never stops trying and has a great team attitude. She is keen to learn more and enjoys practice” said Mark Sainsbery, assistant coach of the Under 14 Waverley Falcons.

The ‘Princess of the Court’ is an initiative of Basketball Victoria’s Women in Basketball program. Supported by the State Government, the program aims to increase female participation in all aspects of the sport of basketball. Basketball Victoria selects ‘Princess of the Court’ winners based not just on performance, but also other qualities which make them an asset to the sport.

“Congratulations to Holly on winning the ‘Princess of the Court’ award for the first fortnight in April. We wish her all the best for her future in the sport of basketball,” said Wayne Bird, Chief Executive Officer of Basketball Victoria.

Holly will be presented with a 12 Panel Molten GF6 Basketball and a certificate.
