Under 16 (1) Girls Coach Mark Sainsbery prepared the following report on the girls' successful weekend at the Ballarat Tournament, where they took home the Grand Final in convincing fashion:
The Under 16 (1) Girl’s Team have enjoyed a great team bonding weekend which culminated in claiming the Championship Title over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend.
Game 1 was against fellow Metro 3 team Frankston and what a way to start a Tournament finishing at 30 all after regular time in a very entertaining game. Unfortunately, we went down 36 – 35 in a dramatic overtime period. Our second game was also against a Metro 3 team in Broadmeadows who we had beaten by 19 points the night before in our regular season. The Bronco’s came to play in this game and we went down 28 – 32 which wasn’t the ideal start to our weekend.
Sunday was a different story as we took care of Werribee by 8 points which set up a Quarter Final clash against the Sunbury Jets which we comfortably won 40 – 25. Our confidence was growing and our defensive efforts were starting to shine.
Monday saw a Semi Final clash against Broadmeadows and the girls were not going to let this one slip away. The 25 – 18 win was set up by another great defensive game and the girl’s were extremely happy knowing they had made it to the Championship game.
I was very confident that we would do well in the Grand Final against the Collingwood All Stars if we stuck to our structures, particularly in defence. We jumped out to a 10 – 0 lead on the back of some great driving by Lauren Mitchell. We totally smothered Collingwood in defence with Chloe Betts, Holly Sainsbery, Sami Stewart and Daniella Catanese giving nothing away. Jemima Sennitt enjoyed a purple patch in the second half helping herself to 8 points and Katherine Ellis and Jacquie Stabelos both saw quality minutes to ensure that the Falcons would claim the Championship Title with an emphatic 42 – 10 win over the All Stars. Tamara Ludekens enjoyed a wonderful weekend of basketball, displaying composure in the point position in the Grand Final which saw her rewarded with the MVP.
A big thank you to Waverley Basketball Association for their support of the team for the Tournament, the parents for their commitment and also our wonderful Team Manager Pina Catanese for her outstanding organisational skills.
