The West Gate Bridge trend continued this week at the State Championship Men headed back to Corio for a second serving of Stingray and came away with the win. It was a close game throughout, with the Falcons getting on top in the final quarter to get back in the winner’s column after last week’s loss to Diamond Valley. Ivan Platenik again led the scoring and Bennie Lewis was up and about as usual.
The Championship Women headed to Eltham on Sunday hoping to snap their losing streak, and while they couldn’t get the win, their performance indicated a renewed energy in the group which will surely see them taking home some wins in the near future. Georgia Stirton was superb, Melissa Moyle created havoc for the Wildcat defence and Taylor Dickinson once again snared double figure rebounds. Eltham are a quality team in this league and for the Falcons to push them all four quarters is a very positive sign moving forward.
The Falcons Youth teams played host to Geelong on Sunday and split the double header. The Youth Women got things started, however the Falcons missed the mark in the first quarter, going without a field goal and digging a hole they couldn’t find a way out of. The final three quarters were quite even, however the damage was already done. Danni Pisano had her best game of the season, dishing out eight assists (impressive since the team only scored 14 field goals, and Pisano herself scored three of those).
The Youth Men had a better time of it, topping the 100 point mark once again as they did away with Geelong to the tune of 20 points. Michael Dow was on a tear, destroying defenders on his way to 40 points (more than the entire Youth Women team, in a statistical quirk) and 12 rebounds. Kuany Kuany also had his best outing of the season so far with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
The Women host a Youth League/Championship double header this Saturday Night against Hume City at the Falcon Nest while the Men face a similar double header against Hume City at Broadmeadows. The Championship Men will back up on Sunday at home against the feisty Sherbooke Suns.
