Under 12 Girls Make VC

The Waverley Falcons Under 12 Girls have qualified for Victorian Championship after finishing on top of their group in Pool AA. This is the first time the Falcons have had a VC team in Under 12 Girls.

The team, coached by Trevor De Jong and assisted by Dave Thomas, won all of their post-Christmas grading games to qualify straight through and will get to cool their heels this week while other teams play crossover games. The team has provided the following wrap of their grading experience:

After a strong showing in grading phase 1 and equally good effort in the annual Australia Day tournament the under 12 -1 was set a challenge win pool AA  and off to VC or lose and end up in Metro 1 licking its wounds after a tough grading phase.

Game 1 Werribee:
The trip over the Yarra was going to be the one the coaching staff knew would set the tone for what was to come.  Both Coach Dave and Coach Trev understood the importance of the game knowing the winner of the game would more than likely be the winner of the pool.  A run of fouls towards the end of the fourth quarter saw the Waverley side in a lot of trouble however inaccurate shooting by Werribee and a strong Falcon defence saw a tight finish with the game sewn up by Waverley defeating Werribee by 4 points.
An elated Falcons side happy for the long drive home!

Game 2 Camberwell:
Our second game against Camberwell would see a much different Waverley side.  An airtight defence was still evident but the accurate shooting from previous week was lacking. Once again defence proved to be the key in the win, Falcons withstanding everything thrown at them to hang onto win by 9 points.

Game 3 Dandenong (2):
We front up against Dandenong 2 on home soil in front of a loyal home crowd (very nervous parents) for our last game.  Hopes were high and a win quietly expected.  A very slow, uneventful start saw the coaches call for a quick time out to regroup and change tactics.
The move seemed to work, the team settled and started to gain the ascendancy. The momentum the team gain in the first quarter was taken into the second, the lead quickly grew as the team took a strangle hold on the game.  Play was fluid, teamwork was great to watch and defence ever strong.  With a little breathing space,  Coach Dave and Coach Trev started to try new things to prepare the girls for the season ahead.  The girls responded whilst taking full control of the game.  The game was never in doubt and the win went to the Falcons by 28 points.

Congratulations to the team, and coaches Trev & Dave for getting the girls there.
Thanks to all the parents and families for their support.
