Under 12.2 Girls Tournament Champs

The Under 12.2 Girls had a successful weekend at the tournament, winning their Grand Final over Eltham 4 by five points.

Head Coach Claire Landby gave us a wrap up of the weekend:

Waverley 2 vs Camberwell 2

The Falcons came out hungry for their first win, with Annabel and Anestesia returning from injury. They jumped on Camberwell right from the start, within five minutes the Falcons had a 9 to 2 lead. It was a great team effort from all the girls. The “Speed Queens” (Hannah, Anestesia and Saje) were everywhere grabbing steals and lay-ups. Amelia chipped in with two fantastic lay-ups and Meagan showed us her amazing ability to create and finish plays. Sammy wowed the crowd with her intermediate jump shots.

Result: Waverley 2 (30) defeated Camberwell 2 (7)

Waverley 2 vs Waverley 3
It is always tough playing your friends, but the Waverley 2 girls were able to put on their game faces against Waverley 3. Both teams tried their best against each other. Waverley 2 looked to push the ball early and punish Waverley 3 on the break. This could not have been done without Annabel’s great defence on Waverley 3s star (Lillie G) and Charlotte’s strong boards. Kate helped out with two beautiful transition baskets and so did Romy with an unstoppable 3 point play. But once again all the girls worked exceptionally well as team.

Result: Waverley 2 (30) defeated Waverley 3 (12)

Waverley 2 vs Craigeburn 1
The Falcons got off to a slow start against Craigeburn. Craigeburn set up a zone defence making it difficult for the Falcon’s offense. Down at half time twelve to four. The Falcons were able to get back in the game, trailing by only 4 points, thanks to their “Mighty Mice” (Hannah, Meagan, Anestesia, Sammy and Amelia) showing off their golden hands by getting multiple steals. Combined with some fantastic intercepts from Romy and some good boards from Charlotte and Kate and, last but not least, a stunning effort from Annabel we were back in the game. Unfortunately, the Falcons (although they fought hard) couldn’t overcome the strong Craigeburn side.

Result: Waverley 2 (13) defeated by Craigeburn 1 (17)

Waverley 2 vs Whittlesea 2
The Falcon’s got off to a fantastic start against Whittlesea leading 8 to 2. Unfortunately, Whittlesea fought back hard and caught up. The teams continued going basket for basket for the rest of the game. Annabel once again put in a solid performance and Amelia had some amazing intercepts.

Result: Waverley 2 (14) drew with Whittlesea 2 (14)

Waverley 2 vs Eltham 4
The Falcons were confident and ready to play early Sunday morning with all the girls putting in a wonderful offensive effort getting to a 19 to 4 lead by half time. Kate and Sammy put in two beautiful baskets each, partly thanks to Meagan and Hannah pushing the ball up the court and getting great passes off early. Annabel’s drives and intercepts were unbelievable.

Result: Waverley 2 (27) defeated Eltham 4 (14)

SEMI FINAL: Waverley 2 vs Craigeburn
Waverley knew they had their work cut out for them against Craigeburn however the girls put in a wonderful performance. The girls worked hard at both ends of the court. Annabel lead the way in defence keeping Craigeburn’s ‘go to player’ quiet with Anestesia’s help. Saje was good offensively with a couple of awesome baskets. Amelia had a fantastic left hand lay-up that stunned everyone!

Result: Waverley 2 (22) defeated Craigieburn (15)

GRAND FINAL: Waverley 2 vs Eltham 4
This was never going to be an easy game but it was Waverley that triumphed over Eltham. To Eltham’s credit they pushed the mighty Falcons the whole game trailing by one with three minutes to go. The Falcon’s showing the crowd what the word team meant with every player contributing to the win in some way. Sammy and Meagan pushed the ball up the court once again generating great passing opportunities. Romy and Saje finished some massive plays with their jump shots from the middle of the key. While Hannah and Anestesia had some great steals and Amelia stopped the Wildcats getting fast breaks. Kate provided some height for the Falcons in the paint, at both ends, as well as Charlotte managing to get two massive boards in the dying moments of the game. Annabel was the shining star of the game working hard to get the game MVP honours.

Result: Waverley 2 (24) defeated Eltham 4 (19)
