18.2 Boys

*** champions ***

The U/18.2 Boys Falcons Team were looking forward to their first match under coach Kevin Benn on his return from America, as well as being scheduled to play three teams from their VJBL pool to show them where they stood for the upcoming grading games.
First match saw us pitted against the falcons U/18.4 side. After getting to an 8-0 lead, scoring was pretty much even after that, and we were successful 35-25. A very good effort by our no. 4 side.
The next three matches saw us pitted against our fellow pool VJBL CC competitors and our strong defence was starting to show out, with a 34-12 win over Camberwell 3, 34-24 win over Blackburn 2, and a 19-20 loss to Oakleigh 1 after they were successful with 2 free throws with with 1 second to go.  A valiant three point attempt by Josh the whole length of the court went extremely close to being a fairytale ending.
Sunday morning saw us play a rep team from the Mulgrave Basketball Association from Northern Queensland, and saw us winning 46-10. Sadly, they were to fly home to a much greater storm the following week.
The semi final saw a heart stopping game against Keilor 3 which went to extra time, which wasn’t exactly appreciated given the oppressive heat. Keilor did not score in extra time and we prevailed 33-28.
The grand final saw us up against an undefeated Kings team from the other pool. Whilst not a rep team, they had not lost to any of the rep teams they had come up against.
Waverley won the grand final 45-14 in a very assured display and Mitch was awarded the game MVP.
The whole side was pumped after the win, not even the trophy mix up was going to deflate us.
Even though we have since lost Xavier and Josh to the ones, the 18.2s are looking forward to a very successful season.
Team consisted of:  Aaron Green, Cameron Gray, Jonathan Polonsky, Josh Case, Mitchell Evans, Nathan Grigg, Nathan Guscott, Oscar Mackechnie, Sam Greenwood and Xavier Evans.
Much thanks to Kevin and all players and parents.
Good luck to Xavier and Josh in the ones, and we thank Andrew Case very much for all his work as team manager –he  will be sorely missed.
