16 Girls Tournament Success

Congratulations to the 16.1 Girls team coached by Elias Palioyiannis and assisted by Christine Boahene. The team, consisted of Shannen Bethune, Taylor Dickinson, Claire Ioannidis, Tiernyn Johnson, Isobel Leggett, Evangelia Nikolitsis, Olivia Puchalski, Steph Sandoval (Grand Final MVP), Tess Seddon and Elise Vadiveloo.

With a disappointing first half to the Metro 1 Season the girls really needed to get something out of this long weekend and entered the Nunawading Tournament in AR Grade. Their success will be a great confidence booster from this point forward.

The girls started their hectic campaign at 8am Saturday, involving four fairly comfortable victories against South Australian teams and the girls looked forward to a more challenging Sunday.  This included a nail biting draw to Bulleen(2) ending with a foul shot, with 9 seconds to go. They also defeated Knox, and were undefeated throughout the group games and qualified for the Grand Final on Monday against Bulleen(2) again. The girls came out with a better attitude and began the game well, with a huge contingent of supporters ready to cheer them on. They put in an outstanding team effort to lead from start to finish, despite a mini comeback by Bulleen in the dying minutes of the game. Waverley bravely stood its ground to win by three and become the 16 AR Champions!!!

Great performances throughout the weekend by all, and a special mention by efforts from Eva, Claire and Steph who worked very hard up the floor the whole weekend. Hopefully this will hold the team in good shape for the second half of the Metro 1 season.  Special thanks to Team Manager Fran Ioannidis and Assistant Coach Christine Boahene who were outstanding. Also a huge Thank You to our dedicated parents for safely delivering the girls to each venue on time, assisting with scoring, and for being a terrific support to the players, coaches and manager. Finally, thanks to our team mascot, Melanie Ioannidis from the 14.1 girls who filled in a couple of games and scored a memorable goal.
Overall it was reward for all the work these kids have been putting in at practice.

Congratulations once again girls, you did us all proud!!!
