Under 18 Girls Easter Classic Runners Up

The Waverley Falcons Under 18 Girls took their 2010 Championship campaign interstate over the Easter weekend as they finished Runners Up in the annual Norwood Easter Classic.

The result, which has been touted as the highest placed finish of any Falcons girls team in the Championship division of the tournament, is yet another positive step for the team after splitting their opening four games of the Victorian Championship season.
After an action packed nine hour car trip, or for some a rather tedious one hour plane ride, the Falcons wasted no time declaring their intentions for the weekend, opening the tournament with a decisive 22 point win over Sandringham at Wayville.
After taking some time to appreciate the simplicity and charm of the historic North Adelaide area, the Falcons set about continuing their good start as they headed to Pasadena to face the Southern Tigers. In a closely fought contest which saw each team assert their ascendancy at various times, the Falcons held their nerve during a tense final quarter to claim an important two point victory.
With two wins under their belt from as many starts, the Falcons then ventured to the Mars Sporting Complex to take on the Melbourne Tigers. The journey to Mars proved valuable as the Falcons lifted their game to the stratosphere, taking a narrow half time lead against their highly fancied opponents. The Tigers finished strongly however, ending the Falcons’ unbeaten start with a nine point victory.
After having already sewn up a semi final spot, the Falcons returned to Wayville to face the Norwood Flames. With the Flames needing a win to book their place in the finals, the level of intensity was evident from the very start, a 21 point win to Norwood setting up a tantalising rematch in the semi final later that night.
As tantalising as the rematch was, the Easter barbeque back at the motel took tantalising to a new level. With the finest in Greek cuisine doing laps above the spit, and some traditional Greek music such as Jason Derulo and Pink bellowing out the speakers, the Falcons turned their attention to the task at hand. With a spot in the Grand Final up for grabs, the Falcons made their first trip to the Distinctive Homes Dome to take on the Norwood Flames once more.
The Falcons, backed by a vocal cheer squad, held a slender edge throughout the contest, but were never quite able to extinguish the Flames. Heading into the final minutes the Falcons turned to their defence to get them over the line, their manic ball pressure forcing the Flames into key turnovers as the Falcons ran away with a gritty nine point win.
The Falcons returned to the Dome the next day to take on old foes the Melbourne Tigers in an all-Victorian Grand Final. Despite taking an early advantage, the Falcons were not able to maintain their intensity as the Tigers flexed their muscle through the second and third quarters to establish an unassailable lead.
With a critical stretch of the Victorian Championship season looming after the break, the Falcons will look to build on their efforts in Adelaide as they continue to press for a coveted top four spot.
