BASKETBALL THRIVES IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Basketball Australia and governing bodies of basketball launched a national campaign late last year with new branding, logos and initiatives. ‘Basketball – everyone’s game’

Although at the elite level, some media is reporting the sport is struggling, we would like to announce the increase in growth Waverley Basketball and the local community is experiencing. Participation rates are through the roof, with more demand every day.

As part of the new launch, Waverley decided to run the Aussie Hoops program for beginner players who can practice skills, drills and games in a less competitive environment. Participants receive a t-shirt, basketball, backpack, drink bottle and sweat band, as well as 9 weeks of specialized coaching. The program took off, and currently has over 34 registered boys and girls from 5 – 12 years old.

Glen Iris Primary School recently co-ordinated an after school Aussie Hoops program which resulted in over 100 students from grade 1 – 4 enrolling.  Please see 'domestic competition news' for information on the new Glen Iris District Basketball Club.

Aussie Hoops is available to all schools and clubs throughout the local community, and can be run during lunch times or after school hours. If your club wishes to expand and offer basketball to players who currently do not have an avenue into your club, or if you are a school with a number of keen basketballers, please contact Shane at the Waverley office to discuss further. It’s a great incentive to bring potential players into your current program, or begin a new program, as seen at Glen Iris Primary School who will now be starting their own district club to their children, as well as families in the adjacent suburbs and neighboring schools such as Malvern Central and Hartwell Primary.
