Falcons in Grand Finals

Five Falcons teams will compete in VJBL Grand Finals this weekend. It's been a long gruelling season and these teams have hung tough and won their way through to the biggest stage. Now just one win away from party time, let's take a look at the challenge that awaits each of them this weekend:

Friday September 9

UNDER 12 BOYS VJL 2

Frankston (2) vs Waverley

6:50pm Dandenong Court 6

Final ladder position:

Frankston (2) – 1st place (16-2)

Waverley – 3rd place (12-5-1)

Previous meetings:

Round 8: Frankston (2) (39) dft. Waverley (37)

Round 15: Frankston (2) (28) dft. Waverley (24)

Preview:

After dropping their first game in the finals, the Falcons have certainly lifted. A 12 point win over Casey kept their season alive and a 10 point win over Nunawading saw them book a place in the big dance. Frankston have been the form team all season, however their wins over Waverley haven’t been overly convincing. In their current form, there’s plenty of evidence the Falcons can cause an upset, but despite a number of close games, the reality is Frankston have won 17 of their last 18 games. They will need to be at their best, but the Falcons are capable of getting it done.

UNDER14 BOYS VJL 3

Waverley vs Nunawading (2)

7:50pm Dandenong Court 1

Final ladder position:

Waverley – 1st place (16-1-1)

Nunawading (2) – 2nd place (12-6)

Previous meetings:

Round 1: Waverley (37) dft. Nunawading (2) (36)

Round 12: Nunawading (2) (42) dft. Waverley (39)

Preview:

The Falcons have only realistically been consistently challenged by one team this season. Unfortunately for them, it’s the team they face in the Grand Final, Nunawading. The Spectres were made to do it the hard way after dropping their first finals game, but they’ve responded with two 20-point wins and look to be in red-hot form, while the Falcons were comprehensive in their only finals game so far as well. It certainly looks on recent evidence that the two best teams are playing this week, and we’ll get to see who can stand up in the bright lights.

Sunday September 11

BOYS UNDER 14 REGIONAL 3 CENTRAL

Waverley (4) vs Waverley (2)

12:40pm Waverley Court 1

Final ladder position:
Waverley (4) – 2nd place (12-5-1)

Waverley (2) – 1st place (13-5)

Previous meetings:

Round 3: Waverley (4) (38) dft. Waverley (2) (37)

Round 10: Waverley (2) (42) dft. Waverley (4) (26)

Semi-Final: Waverley (4) (35) dft. Waverley (2) (31)

Preview:

Congratulations to the Waverley Falcons on winning the Boys Under 14 Regional (3) Central premiership.

We’d also like to congratulate the Waverley Falcons who were runners up.

OK so that’s being a little silly (and a fairly lame joke at that) but in fairness these teams finished first and second. They each won a game against the other during the season and it was the lower ranked Waverley (4) who just won their semi-final matchup. In the meantime they both had close wins against Diamond Valley to help land them with this matchup. It’s been a long time since an all-Waverley Grand Final, and it’s going to be a strange spectacle, but the players on the court will be giving it all in any case.

BOYS UNDER 16 REGIONAL 1 EAST

Nunawading (3) vs Waverley (3)

3:40pm Kilsyth Court 1

Final ladder positions:

Nunawading (3) – 1st place (15-2-1)

Waverley (3) – 2nd place (14-4)

Previous meetings:

Round 8: Nunawading (3) (39) dft. Waverley (3) (38)

Round 15: Waverley (3) (49) dft. Nunawading (3) (39)

Semi-Final: Nunawading (3) (47) dft. Waverley (3) (43)

Preview:

It’s been a long finals series for these boys, but they’ve reached the big dance courtesy of a 10 point win in last week’s Falcons-showdown. Two weeks ago when these teams last met it was the Spectres winning a close, but very high scoring game. Such has been the high scoring nature of games between these teams, that the lowest total scored by either team in their season series has been a healthy 38 points. I guess the forecast for Sunday might be ‘cloudy with a chance of no defence’, but we think, in the Grand Final, the lock down might be on and we could be in for a bit of an arm wrestle.
