Falcons in VJBL Finals Week 3

We can get as many as nine Falcons Grand Final teams after this Friday. There's a couple already there and potentially more, so be sure to get out around the courts this Friday because we have plenty of Falcons teams playing around Melbourne.

VJBL Finals Week 3 - Friday September 2

Boys Under 12.1 – VJL 2

Preliminary Final vs Nunawading 3

7:20pm State Basketball Court Court 6

A win over Casey last week gives the Falcons a chance at snaring a Grand Final spot, but they’ll have to get over the Spectres to get there. It’s been 0-3 against Nunawading this season, but all quite close so they’ll need to find a little something extra. The shooting touch came through for the boys on Friday, scoring 42 points, but they haven’t scored more than 30 against Nuna this year so it’s time to step up at the offensive end.

Boys Under 14.1 – VJL 3

Through to Grand Final

After a comprehensive win over Corio Bay on Friday the boys will sit back and await the result of Corio Bay and Nunawading 2 to find out who they’re playing in the Grand Final. Going on results from this season, Corio Bay would be the preferred opponent.

Boys Under 14.2 – Regional 3 Central

Preliminary Final vs Diamond Valley 3

7:40pm Nunawading Court 3

The derby last week ended in a close loss for Waverley 2, but their top-of-the-table finish at the end of the regular season means they’ve earnt another shot at a spot in the big one. Diamond Valley were on the better end of their own close game last week, and their last result against Waverley 2 was a good one. It’s a challenge, but the boys will be excited with the opportunity to win their way into the big dance.

Boys Under 14.4 – Regional 3 Central

Through to Grand Final

The boys have gone boom-boom in finals so far, knocking off the Eagles and their fellow Falcons to stitch up an early ticket to Grand Final town. With a well-earned rest, will they head to Nunawading to do some scouting?

Boys Under 14.6 – Regional 6 East

Preliminary Final vs Mornington 5

6:40pm Frankston Court 2

Despite finishing in fifth spot, the boys have scored two upset wins to find themselves just one win from an improbable Grand Final spot. While the last two wins were impressive, this one would be downright ridiculous, given the Breakers actually defeated the Falcons by 60 points last time. In 2009 Melbourne Tigers in Big V beat us by 50 and 60 in consecutive weeks (they had about 6 NBL players on the team), when we played them later in the season we scored the biggest upset of the year* after being down by 28 in the second quarter. There you go boys, get out there and make some history of your own!

Boys Under 16.2 & Under 16.3 – Regional 1 East

Preliminary Final – Local Derby

8:40pm Waverley Court 1

We had a derby last week and we get another one this week. This is highly unusual but very exciting. It’s pretty simply for these teams: winner to the Grand Final, loser to the bronze medal game. We’d have loved a Falcons-Falcons Grand Final (still might get one in 14s) but the upside is we definitely get a team through from this game. Waverley 2 arguably has the form heading in after winning both finals games, but Waverley 3 finished higher and were just four points away from the Grand Final last week. The season series was split 1-1 and this one is just too difficult to predict.

Girls Under 12.2 – VJL 2

Preliminary Final vs Knox 3

6:40pm Dandenong Court 9

It was a tough ask for the girls last week and they fell short against a dominant Frankston team. This is a good test for them though after their three point win over Knox two weeks ago. Making a Grand Final would be a great achievement for the girls and they very much have that chance, and if history is anything to go by, it’ll most likely be a very close game, we’re predicting three points or less. Could it be decided at the free throw line?

Girls Under 14.1 – VC

Semi Final vs Knox 3

7:00pm MSAC Court 2

The girls got a bit of a lesson in finals ball last week from the top team Warrandyte. Second chances are fleeting though and they’ll be hoping to make the most of it this week. Altona finished eighth and surprisingly beat fifth placed Nunawading last week, so this one is a little hard to call. The good news for the Falcons is that they took care of business last time when they played at Altona, but as demonstrated last week some teams lift for finals games and they won’t be taking this one lightly at all.

*Four points in that game for yours truly…probably the difference.
