Waverley Falcons Big V star Dexter Kernich-Drew has made another big step in his outstanding basketball journey, signing with the reigning NBL Champions Perth Wildcats for the 2016/17 NBL season.
It's a great result for Dexter, who first played at Waverley in Under 18s and Youth League Men before spending four seasons at leading US College Washington State. In his first year at Washington State Dexter was a teammate of Klay Thompson, half of the NBA's famous Splash Brothers.
Dexter returned to the Falcon Nest this year and has proved to be an important cog in the Falcons offense, and a versatile defender, helping the Falcons to a top two finish at the end of the regular season.
All the while Dexter has been working hard to keep his NBL amitions alive, spending time training with the Wildcats last season and breaking through for a spot on the roster for the Wildcats' championship defence.
Dexter is the second current Falcon to make an NBL core roster, with Centre Matt Hodgson coming off a breakout year with the Adelaide 36ers. It hightlights the level of talent the Falcons put on the floor each week.
The boys have a well earned week off this week by way of their top two finish, but they'll be back on the floor next week and are just one step away from a Grand Final spot.
Meanwhile, the Falcons women head down to Rosebud where they'll hope to unleash a Citizen Kaning on the Southern Peninsular Sharks. Film references aside it is sure to be a ripping game. These teams had a close one two weeks ago on the Falcons home floor, and heading down the peninsula to take on the Sharks is always a tough road trip. If the Falcons can get up we may well get to see them on the home floor again before the season's end.
