Falcons in Finals - Grand Final Wraps and One Preview

Three Junior Falcons teams took to the floor in Grand Finals on the weekend, while a bunch more played in bronze medal games.

We'll have a look at how our Grand Finalists went further down the page, but firstly, there is one more big game before we draw curtains on the 2015 season:

Under 12 Girls VC RESERVE GRAND FINAL

Waverley vs Broadmeadows

7:10pm Dandenong Court 9

The Falcons edged past Sunbury on Friday in a high scoring game 49-44 to book a spot in the VC Reserve Grand Final. Lady luck was on the Falcons side when top seeded Melbourne Tigers were eliminated earlier in the finals series, however the Falcons instead have to front up to the in-form Broadmeadows Broncos. The Broncos were the team that derailed Melbourne's finals campaign, and then got through an equally high scoring prelim final 50-48. So there's one thing we know: both teams can put the ball in the basket.

That statement flies in the face of the result when these teams met in Round 8. On that night, the Broncos claimed a narrow one point win in a comparatively defensive affair, 32-31. Fans could probably expect a bit more scoring this time around, unless Grand Final nerves get the better of the young kids. All signs point to a close game, so with no other Basketball on this Friday, why not get down to Dandenong and support Coach Claire Landby and the girls in the last Falcons game in the 2015 season.

GRAND FINAL REPORTS

Under 18 Boys VJL4

Waverley (2) 58 dft. Blackburn (2) 56

Somebody (it was me) predicted that this game would go 'right down to the wire', and that somebody was right on the money. The Falcons were actually in a bit of a tough spot in the game and it didn't look good for them, but the boys found a way. The high scoring nailbiter was in tune with all the games these teams played during the season, and while it took a fast finish, Coach Paul Angus and his crew were able to get out on the right side of the equation. Good job boys.

Under 20 Boys VJL5

Westerport 43 dft. Waverley (2) 33

Somebody (me again) made the point last week that while Westernport only finished 4th, it was the one matchup the top finishing Falcons probably wanted to avoid given the results during the season. Unfortunately for our boys, the Steelers made it three from three against the Falcons with a 10 point win here. Sometimes there are teams that you just struggle to match up well against for whatever reason, and that appears to be the case here. Nonetheless a great season from the Falcons, who shoukd be well pleased with their efforts.

Under 16 Boys East 4

Waverley (4) 56 dft. Westernport (3) 35

The ever-increasingly dominant Falcons finished their season in fine style with a hard-to-argue 21 point win against the Steelers. Really since about Round 5, the Falcons have been putting space between themselves and most of the other teams in East 4. The only team that looked a realistic chance to snap the streak was the Steelers, so the Falcons had to be switched on here and they were. Mark Handley and the boys bringing home the East 4 Premiership.

BRONZE MEDAL GAMES

There were quite a number of teams involved in Bronze Medal games on the Sunday, I'll try and get through as many results as I can without stopping, so apologies if I miss anyone, let me know and I'll add them in! Ok, 12.3 Girls won, 14.4 girls didn't quite win, 14.3 girls defeated 14.2 girls, 14.5 boys won strongly, 16.5 boys also got up. Hopefully I haven't left anyone out, from Under 16 up, the Bronze Medal games were optional.

Come down on Sunday September 20 and celebrate the season at our Presentation Day, BBQ starts at 11am, presentations at midday.
