Falcons in Finals - Week 2 Previews

After a thrilling first week of finals, the VJBL post-season action now enters week two. We have a number of teams this week facing elimination, while some others will be playing to book a spot in the big dance.

Our Victorian Championship teams also begin their finals campaigns this week. So let's get into it and have a look at who'll be hitting the courts this Friday, August 28.

Under 12.1 Boys - VJL ONE

Elimination Final Waverley vs Knox (2) 7:40pm Dandenong Crt 10

With a great effort last week against Casey, the young fellas have pushed through to the second round of finals. The Falcons dropped both encounters against Knox during the season, but were far from disgraced on either occasion. Losing margins of just seven and four points indicate the boys should be in this all the way. They'll be hoping this is the time they can get over the top of the Raiders and if they can hold them to under 45 points, they should be a great chance.

Elimination Final Waverley vs Mornington 7:20 Dandenong Crt V1

A nine point win over Shepparton opened the door for the Falcons to move on to week two of finals and they'll take on the Breakers in another elimination bout. The first time these teams met the Breakers got the win by a solitary point, on the second occasion the young fellows from down on the peninsula extended that margin to 11. The Falcons have a bit of catching up to do on that result, but if they can keep their form from last week going, it's definitely possible.

Under 14.5 Boys - East 5

Elimination Final Waverley (5) vs Chelsea (2) 7:40pm Springers Leisure Centre Crt 1

Last week's heartbreaking one point loss to Eltham now has the Falcons facing elimination (at least until the bronze medal game) in this battle against the Gulls. The prospects are good for the Falcons however, with their two contests against Chelsea this season resulting in a draw and a six point win. Finals are always tough, and the boys were very very close last week, so they'll be a good shot if they can bring a similar effort this week.

Under 16.4 Boys - East 4

Qualifying Final Waverley (4) vs Westernport (3) 8:40pm Patterson River Secondary Crt 1

You may as well call this Falcons team 'Miley Cyrus' after the way the came in like a wrecking ball in the second half of the season. The boys have enjoyed an average winning margin of 39 points over their final eight games, propelling them to a first placed finish. Their lowest minning margin in that stretch was by 10 points over this week's oppenents, the Steelers. Strong form notwithstanding, finals are another thing all together, and while all signs point to a Falcons Grand Final berth, they'll need to be on their game.

Under 16.5 Boys - East 5

Elimination Final Waverley (5) vs Ringwood (6) 6:40pm Nunawading Crt 3

The team that has continually defied the odds this season gave us another special performance on Friday when they defeated Blackburn by four points. They will look to go another week when they take on Ringwood who they defeated by 16 just a few weeks ago. This was a stark contrast to their initial result when the Hawks were victorious by 10 points, so really it's hard to say how this might end up, but the Falcons do have momentum on their side.

Under 18.2 Boys - VJL FOUR

Qualifying Final Waverley (2) vs Blackburn (2) 9:40pm Knox Crt 4

After a very strong regular season the Falcons boys locked away top spot and as such they move straight to this game, with a spot in the Grand Final available to the winner. The chances are however that this game will be a real nailbiter given the two results so far. Early on the Falcons defeated the Vikings by four points, and the second time around the Vikings returned the favour with a one point win. Can the Falcons get up in another close one?

Under 18.5 Boys - East 7

Elimination Final Waverley (5) vs Sherbrooke 7:40pm Ringwood Crt 2

After a quality win over Westernport last week the gents will look to bring themselves within a win of the Grand Final in this appointment with the Suns. The matchup as a pretty reasonable one for the Falcons, who defeated the Suns by seven points way back in Round One. The Suns grabbed a one point win the second time the teams met, but you'd still have to rate the Falcons a red hot chance in what will no doubt be a very competitive game with a close finish.

Under 20.2 Boys - VJL 5

Qualifying Final Waverley (2) vs Warrandyte (2) 9:40pm Montmerency Crt 2

The fast finishing Falcons have been very strong in the second half of the season and paid their way straight through to the second week of finals. They can book a Grand Final spot with a win against the Venom, whom they have defeated twice during the season. With the odds in the Falcons' favour, the boys will be ready and raring to go.

Under 12.1 Girls - VC Reserve

Qualifiying Final Waverley vs Altona 7:00pm MSAC Crt Crt 4

The scouting report should be on point for both teams given they met just this past week. The Gators scored a one point win to more or less lock this return matchup in. The Falcons have been quite strong in the second half of the season, an interesting sidenote being that their last two games have been a one point win and a one point loss. If this game also goes down to the wire, the Falcons should be well experienced in late game situations.

Under 12.3 Girls - East 1

Qualifying Final Waverley (3) vs Southern Peninsula (2) 7:40pm Frankston Crt 3

The top finishing Falcons find themselves just one win away from Grand Final action, and to get there on the early train they'll need to get the job done against the Sharks. It's been a mix and match series between these teams, the Sharks won the first game, the Falcons returned fire on the second occasion. Can the Falcons get enough out of an undermanned front court? That may be the question which decides the result in this game.

Under 14.1 Girls - VC Reserve

Qualifying Final Waverley vs Latrobe City 8:20pm Dandenong Crt V1

A roller-coaster season for the Falcons where they recovered from some early struggles to have a strong second half of the season, sees the girls lined up against the Energy in a Qualifying bout. The Falcons have dealt with some injury concerns lately but the base of work has been done to be very competitive here. The Energy held all the power when the teams battled in Traralgon a few weeks ago and the Falcons will be keen to cause a blackout on Friday.

Under 14.2 Girls - East 1

Elimination Final Waverley (2) vs Pakenham 7:40pm Bentleigh Crt 1

In a very solid performance, the Falcons kept Kilsyth to just 16 points last week on their way to a 14 point win. They now face a Pakenham team who have tested them during the season. Early on, the Falcons fell short to the Warriors by 5 points, but they made the adjustments the second time around to record an eight point win. If they can find a way to handle the height of the Warriors, they can compete well in this game.

Under 14.3 Girls - East 1

Qualifying Final Waverley (3) vs Chelsea 8:40pm Bentleigh Crt 1

In the other game of this double header, the Falcons 3s have a chance to grab a spot in the Grand Final. While these girls have been consistently amongst the best in this league, the Gulls have beena bit of a thorn in the Falcons' side, winning both the encounters this season. The margins haven't been extreme though, and with some attention to detail from the Falcons they are definitely a good chance of Grand Final action, either from this game or next week.

Under 14.4 Girls - East 4

Elimination Final Waverley (4) vs Eltham (7) 8:40pm Bulleen Blue

The girls were impressive last week in their win over Blackburn, and now embark on another elimination final against the Wildcats. These two teams finished the ladder equal on wins but Eltham got the nod on head-to-head. The Falcons got the win in their first matchup by seven points, but the Wildcats responded with an eight point win the next time. It does make this game a difficult one to predict but that is part of the fun at this time of year.

Under 16.1 Girls - VJL ONE

Elimination Final Waverley vs Latrobe City (2) 8:40pm Dandenong Crt 9

After they were defeated by Ringwood last week, the Falcons will look to bounce back and keep their season alive as they face an impressive and suprising Energy team. The Falcons will look to their defence to lead the way as it did the first time the teams met and the Falcons took a 14 point win. The second game was a chance for both teams to score freely in the 48-46 shootout. With a chance to play for a Grand Final spot on the line, it will be an intense, desperate game.

Under 16.4 Girls - East 4

Elimination Final Waverley (4) vs Blackburn (2) 7:40pm Nunawading Crt 1

The Falcons came up short against Chelsea last week, leading them to this must-win matchup with the Vikings. The improvement between the two teams in their games this season works in the Falcons' favour. In the first meeting the two teams drew, but the Falcons blew the second game out for a 17 point win. It won't be that easy this time around, finals never are, but the Falcons can go in with the knowledge that their best will give them every chance.

Under 18.1 Girls - VC Reserve

Elimination Final Waverley vs Sunbury 9:40pm MSAC Court 2

A big second half run from the Falcons was snapped last week, however form and momentum still runs strong in this team. When these teams met in round six the Falcons were in good shape with a strong win. The pressure of an elimination game however does things to players, so it will be all about controlling the controlables for the Falcons. Another strong defensive performance will be the first step to giving the Falcons a shot at moving to the next round.
