Falcons in Finals - Week 1 Previews

It is finals time in the Victorian Junior Basketball League. While some of our Falcons teams bid a fond farewell to Season 2015 last week, a bunch more are about to embark on a exciting finals campaign.

Let's take a look at the form guide for those teams playing their first finals game this Friday Night.

Before we start, special metions go to our Under 12.3 Girls, Under 16.4 Boys, Under 18.2 Boys and Under 20.2 Boys who have finished first in their divisions, and therefore earned a week off in the first round of finals.

Our Victorian Championship teams (Under 18.1 Boys, Under 12.1 Girls, Under 14.1 Girls, Under 18.1 Girls and Under 20 Girls) have one more round to go before finals, so we will get to look at some of those teams next week.

Under 12.1 Boys - VJL ONE

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley vs Casey (2) 6:40pm Dandenong Crt 5

The boys have come from nowhere after four losses and a draw in their first five games. The draw came against their opponents this Friday, Casey. The second time these teams met the Falcons showed great improvement by taking a commanding 16 point win. The Falcons have hit the 40 point mark both times against Casey this season, so that might be the magic number to get them in a winning position in Friday's elimination final.

Under 12.2 Boys - East 2

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley (2) vs Hawthorn (5) 6:20pm Nunawading Crt 4

Funnily enough these young men also drew with their finals opponents when they first met. The Falcons and the Magic went 25 all on first introductions, however the Falcons were superior in the return bout, claiming a seven point win. Despite a tough loss to the top team last week, the Falcons will come in with confidence from their previous efforts.

Under 14.1 Boys - VJL ONE

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley vs Shepparton 8:40pm Mill Park Crt 2

The Falcons were unlucky to miss out on third spot and the double chance by head to head, but that's the way to cookie crumbles and the good news is they have every reason to back themselves in Friday's 'win or go home' clash against Shepparton. The boys played host to the Gators just last Friday and won by 10 points. Earlier this season the Falcons travelled to Shepparton and had a very long trip home after losing by one point. Last week's result should have the Falcons up and about, but finals is a different ball game and they'll need to find a little something extra this week.

Under 14.5 Boys - East 5

Qualifying Final (2nd vs 3rd) Waverley (5) vs Eltham (7) 6:30pm Balwyn High School Crt 1

These teams will go up against each other for the second time in as many weeks as the Falcons look to reverse the result from Round 18, where the Wildcats got the better of them by five points. This was an improvement on their first meeting when the Eltham boys were 23 points better. If the Falcons can improve again this week, it could be enough to get them over the line. Defence will be crucial, the Falcons will probably need to hold Eltham under 40 points to be a chance to win this one.

Under 16.2 Boys - East 2 Central

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley (2) vs Camberwell (3) 9:40pm Nunawading Crt 3

The Falcons will look to stave of elimination against the Dragons and will be full of beans after their seven point win in the corresponding matchup two weeks ago. While the Dragons grabbed a one point win the first time around, it is clear that either team could get the win come Friday. Neither team has been able to hold the other under 50 points in either meeting, so the defensive change ups will be important, and committment to defend will go a long way to getting through to next week.

Under 16.5 Boys - East 5

Elimination Final (6th vs 7th) Waverley (5) vs Blackburn (4) 8:30pm Balwyn High School Crt 2

Red hot form. That is what the Falcons take into this game after a tremeandous second half of the season that saw them drop just one game. The only issue is that game was against Blackburn, their opponents this week, by just two points. Nonetheless, if recent form can continue, the Falcons may well be able to push this dream run on for another week.

Under 18.5 Boys - Regional 7

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley (5) vs Western Port (3) 7:40pm Casey Leisure Crt 1

The Falcons haven't had much success against the Steelers this season, dropping their two encounters by 20 points and seven points. There is encouragement in the amount they took off the defecit in the second meeting, and the Falcons also come into this game on a two game winning streak. It may require an upset of sorts, but the Falcons are capable of surviving and advancing with a good performance.

Under 14.2 Girls - East 1

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley (2) vs Kilsyth (3) 7:40pm Ringwood Crt 3

Two weeks ago the Falcons built a big lead against Kilsyth before holding on for an eight point win. This was a slight improvement on their first meeting when the Falcons got the win by just three points. They will go on favourites, but history suggests that the Cobras are capable of challenging, and possibly knocking off the Falcons. If they control the boards and play good D, the Falcons will give themselves every chance of moving through to the next round.

Under 14.3 Girls - East 1

Qualifying Final (2nd vs 3rd) Waverley (3) vs Pakenham 6:40pm Dandenong Crt 9

This looks destined to be a close game. The Falcons nearly ended up in first place but for head to head with Chelsea. Now they face the Warriors with the winner to play for a Grand Final spot the next week. The Falcons began their season with a four point win over Pakenham, before defeating them again the second time by just one point. It all points to a nail-biter, even in the crazy town that is finals basketball.

Under 14.4 Girls - East 4

Elimination Final (4th vs 5th) Waverley (4) vs Blackburn (3) 7:40pm Bulleen Gold

Another team that narrowly missed out on a doube chance, the Falcons will need to get through the Vikings to extend their season another week. The Falcons took the honours when these teams first met, however the Vikings turned that around in the rematch. So at one win apiece, it may the Falcons recent form that gives them confidence going in to this one, with wins by 40 and 30 in their last two games.

Under 16.1 Girls - VJL ONE

Qualifiying Final (2nd vs 3rd) Waverley vs Ringwood 6:40pm State Basketball Cente Crt 6

Good luck picking this one. The Falcons and the Hawks both finished with 11 wins, 6 losses and a draw, and the Hawks percentage of 109.45% narrowly eclipses the Falcons' 109.40% by point half of a percent. In their two meetings the Falcons won the initial encounter by one point, before the Hawks got the win this past Friday by three points. With so little seperating the teams, every possession will be crucial in this strangely scheduled twilight matchup.

Under 16.4 Girls - East 4

Qualfying Final (2nd vs 3rd) Waverley (4) vs Chelsea (2) 7:40pm Springers Leisure Centre Crt 2

Despite dropping both contests to the Gulls this season, the Falcons will take confidence out of their improvement between games, cutting the margin from 13 points to four points. Recent form also looks good for the Falcons, with four straight wins under the belt. Top team Sherbrooke appears a fair way out in front, but who wouldn't want a chance to knock them off for a spot in the Grand Final?

Best of luck to all Falcons teams, and keep checking back over the next few weeks as we get all the finals action and information to you. If you are out of sorts with nothing to do on your Friday, head out and catch a game!
