Falcons Big V Season Review: Youth Women

Now that the Falcons Big V 2015 campaign has run its course, this week we'll be having a look at how our teams fared in season 2015. Today we review how things went for the Victorian Youth Championship Women.

After a positive preseason, things got off to a rocky start for the 2015 campaign, with the young Falcons enduring tough losses to some of the competitions elite in the early rounds, before producing some much more competitive performances against Frankston and Sandringham.

In round five the Falcons broke through for their first win, getting the job done against eventual finalists Diamond Valley, and backing up the next day to make it two in a row against Ballarat.

The middle and back halves of the season brought intermittent success for the Falcons, including three wins out of four in their home stretch to finish the season. The Falcons finished with an 8-14 win-loss record, which put them one win from finals, but also one win off the bottom in a strangely even conference.

The Falcons managed to suit up 19 different players over the course of the season and who knows how many different starting lineups they went through, but that is all part of the fun in the Victorian Youth Championship.

Among these 19 players came a few fairly impressive individual performances. SCW guard Maxine Allan made the trip to Bendigo to play with the youth girls on a Sunday afternoon, and ended up scoring nearly half the team's score, dropping 24 out of the Falcons' 50 points that day.

Falcons junior and former Grand Final MVP Taylor Dickinson managed to grab 19 rebounds in two consecutive games and averaged 13 rebounds a game across her seven games in the youth team. Another player happy to put numbers across the whole stats sheet was guard Maria Nomikoudis, who had a near triple-double against Diamond Valley, finshing with 16 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists.

With a deep talent pool to work with and all but one junior girls first team in VC this season, the next few seasons are sure to be very exciting for the Falcons VYC Women, who will no doubt aim to secure a finals birth before too long.
