The Waverley Falcons were represented at the 2015 Regional Challenge by two of our girls teams, the 12.3 girls and 14.3 girls.
The Regional Challenge is an annual event on the last Friday of the July school holidays where the top teams from the VJBL East Competition take on the top teams from VJBL North West.
The Falcons teams scored invites to play at the event after very impressive seasons to date, which see both teams up around the top of their East 1 ladders.
The 12.3 Girls, coached by Tania Gunther, played hard however just went down to the Corio Bay Stingrays from Geelong by three points. The 14.3 Girls, coached by Mikaela Miller, scored an exciting overtime win over Keilor Thunder in a high scoring game.
With both teams set to make a big run at finals, the excitment is only just beginning for these young Falcons.
14.3 Coach Mikaela Miller sent us in this report from the night:
What a game ! From the get go you could tell this was going to be a high energy and close game and boy did it live up to that. The first quarter the girls got away to a great start taking the lead and holding it into the break, playing great as a team and making those baskets that really counted. Going into the second quarter after a great start the girls started to tighten up a little letting Keilor catch up and by the half they had taken the lead. Being down by 1 or 2 points at the half was a great spot for the girls because I knew they had heaps left in them to fight out the game.
The third quarter was much like the first half, got off to a great start and then started to tighten up. With 2 seconds left in the third down by 2 we got the ball down Mia threw up a 3, made the shot but unfortunately the refs cancelled it as the siren had already sounded. Going into the Fourth we knew it would take all we had left, it went basket for basket and then Keilor broke away taking a 5 point lead with 1 minute to go.
As we got the ball down the court knowing we had to score as quickly as we could we made an easy basket, then the ball going down the other end we got a steal, drove and got fouled, sent to the line for 2. Making 1 of the 2 cutting the deficit to 2 we knew this was going to be hard, luckily Keilor threw the ball out of court, quick I called a timeout. The girls ran through the play got up a 3 which just missed, luckily we got the rebound, put back missed, another rebound, put back made and foul. Sent to the line for 1. Free throw missed, rebounded, jump ball our possession. Time out called, game winning shot missed, OVERTIME.
3 minutes overtime saw the girls victorious as the momentum from the fourth quarter carried over, final score was 47-44.
Thanks to Grace Libson and Chelsea Gunther who helped with numbers for the game and of course thanks to my girls Elise Van Der Zweep, Mia Vukadinovic, Emily Carni, Megan Baker, Lilly Lange and Ali Pezzimenti.
Also to all the parents and a special thanks to Melissa Lange who kindly stepped up and took the Team Manager role for the night :)
